There are only two days in your life that you cannot do anything; yesterday and tomorrow, all you have is today, wise words indeed from the Dalai Lama.
It feels that we know we can achieve anything but the older or wiser (depending on your point of view) we become, the more the trade-off between success and the hard work required to get it done.
It’s about avoiding the distractions that are placed in front of us which are our daily temptation, and who remembers; “lead us not into…” that we were taught at school.
‘Everyone wants to go to Heaven but nobody wants to die’
We now know what success means to us, and we should by now know that there are very few short cuts in life, and the ones we do see are not really short cuts but people taking advantage of a situation that they have prepared for, for many years.
There are Blogs aplenty written about people with addictive natures and how the 2% can manage their so called ailment to become a positive and use it to drive themselves indefatigably towards a goal, but for the rest of us it’s a choice to do what it takes or accept mediocrity.
I have often met with successful Multi-Level Marketing people, yes there are the 2% having incredible life styles, which is the fodder for the 98% trying to emulate. I found their natures to be quite different from most, in that I feel they would have been successful in any business they tried, because of their thick skinned, insular nature, where it is all about their goal, everything they do they breathe getting the next pin level and cheque, it’s not about anything else!
So what tips can the rest of us who have to take bite sized chunks to try and change our ways slowly with baby steps to achieve what we want in the time we feel we have left? We must all try not to forget we only have today and our baby’s smiles do not last too long.
Here are our tips to get things done.
1. Make a plan.
“To think too long about doing a thing often becomes its undoing.” Eva Young
I always loved the television comedy ‘Red Dwarf’ where four very different characters had to survive one another’s company in deep space light years away from anywhere. Lister the Hologram, was intent on passing an exam for promotion into the Star Corps, and a lot of study was required, when he failed the exams miserably, the others found out that he had spent 6 months planning a timetable of study and not actually studying.
The paralysis of analysis is often cured when parents actually help a child swim by actually putting them supervised into the water so that they can learn something that only physical practice can teach.
We as humans cannot learn to walk without falling flat on our asses more than a few times.
Ask a baby when they will learn to walk and stop crying after falling down each time, and they will just not comprehend there is a thing as not walking!
Make a workable plan that involves actual work on your project and do not spend too much time on the timetable!
If it involves success there will be pain, so accept there will be stress but you can plan to manage the stress in bite sized proportions.
Going to the gym; the biggest mistake by far is people doing too much too quickly, an experienced fitness trainer will start you off on 2kg bells, you may scoff and think this is nonsense a baby can do this, but the object is not to hurt the next day, believe it or not massive gains or losses can be achieved without much pain at all! Build yourself up with a level of manageable stress, and this is where your planning comes in.
2.Breaking it down.
“You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.” Martin Luther King, Jr.
My first job when I left school was working over 60 hours a week in a Butcher’s shop; I would never have managed the work unless I divided the day up to the break times, 0630 AM till 1030 AM I worked and looked forward to a ‘tea break’ pie, 1045-1230 I worked and looked forward to my lunch and so on went the day, If I would have started each day at 0630 and thought:
“Oh My I can’t stop work till 530 PM!” it certainly would have been harder to swallow.
Dieters need not think about their target weight just the next goal of say 5 Lbs. each week.
Soccer players only ever focus on the next goal to win games and seasons
You change your whole prospective from Negative to positive when you achieve a smaller goal and science now can prove a huge physiological change in ourselves for the better when we see some smaller success that helps us reach the bigger goal.
3. Swallow the frog for breakfast
Start with the harder and most unpalatable task off the day and the rest will be easier, Whatever it may be, get it out of your way the first thing you do.
If you start your day this way you will feel relieved. You feel relaxed and good about yourself. And the rest of the day – and your to-do list – tends to feel a lot lighter and easier to move through. It’s amazing what difference this one action makes.
4. Just make a decision
Any decision is better than no decision.
When I was a Salesman I would often leave my bigger potential customers to last in the hope they would call me with good news about a big order, My Sales Manager who was a massive and positive influence on me, just advised me to call them now, either way you get a result, one you get the order and celebrate, two you don’t get the order and we can regroup and try to learn from the experience and be prepared for next year, the third alternative is just no result at all, and the stress of waiting is not good for anyone, knowing is always a better alternative as you can grow from there.
5. Finishing and rewarding
Offer yourself a small treat for finishing a task, whatever floats our boat, a game of online solitaire, a cookie, 30 mins watching a soap opera, whatever you like promise yourself if you finish this task you can have that one thing. Whatever it is, it is more enjoyable when you know you have earned it.
